In their world, there are good and bad vampires: Moroi, who live peacefully among people and only drink blood from donors, as well as possessing the power to control one of the four elements – water, earth, fire, or air; and Strigoi, who are blood-sucking, wicked vampires who drink to murder. Throughout their schooling, Rose and other dhampir guardians are taught to defend Moroi and slay Strigoi. Rose must flee St Vladimir’s with her closest friend, Princess Vasilisa Dragomir, a Moroi and the last of her line, with whom she has an almost unbreakable connection, in order to safeguard Lissa from those who want to harm her and exploit her for their own ends.
